Rec Games - (Non-Traditional)
Rec games is a collection of traditional PE games that incorporate concepts of team play, movement patterns, and fitness. The focus of the unit will be on effort and participation. The games in this unit will include crazy kickball, protect the fort, hector the protector, watusi, and others. Group Fitness/Weight Room - (Fitness) The focus of this unit will be on group fitness activities and weight room concepts. Group fitness activities will include TRX suspension training, zumba, and aerobics. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build off previous work within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose either option within the weight room unit. Broomball - (Non-Traditional Sport)
Broomball is a recreational game (traditionally played on ice) that takes many concepts from ice hockey. Students will learn the background, rules, and skills necessary to play in this non-traditional sport. The focus of the unit will be on participation and effort. You can learn more about Broomball here Weight Room Activities - (Fitness) The focus for this unit will be on functional fitness and flexibility. Functional fitness workouts with include metabolic conditioning, high-intensity interval training, and core development. Flexibility workouts will include core strengthening, mobility exercises, and range of motion improvement. Students will be able to choose either option within the weight room unit. Soccer - (Team & Individual Sports)
Students will learn the basic rules and skills of the game of soccer through game play and skill development activities. The focus will be on skill improvement, game understanding, and effort. Soccer will take place indoors and outdoors, be prepared for both! Strength Training - (Fitness) Students will learn basic strength training concepts with a concentration on functional fitness and foundational multi-joint movements. During the unit students will learn how to perform the core movements and practice them within workouts of their choice. Yoga - (Fitness) Students will participate in beginners level yoga programs with routines emphasizing strength training, flexibility, and stress reduction through breathing exercises and guided meditation. Flag Football - (Team & Individual Sports) Students will learn the basic rules, positions, skills, and strategies of football. The focus of the unit will be on effort and skill practice and improvement. This activity takes place predominately outdoors; students should be prepared to be outside no matter the weather conditions! Bowling - (Recreation) During this unit students will learn the rules, scoring, and game play of bowling. The focus will be on learning the basics of this lifelong activity, and how students can participate in it after their time in high school. Flexibility - (Fitness)
Students will explore activities that help develop and maintain flexibility. Yoga will be the primary activity practiced, however, other activities will include relaxation techniques, mobility through foam rolling, and proper warm-up routines. Gatorball (Non-Traditional Sport)
A team game that involves concepts and skills from soccer, basketball, and handball. The focus of the unit will be participation and effort. Weight Room Activities (Fitness) The focus will be on strength training and cardiovascular health concepts. Students will have the choice of learning and practicing basic upper and lower body strength training exercises and routines, or cardiovascular activities such as, walking and jogging. |
