Walking: Students will learn how a consistent walking program helps to improve their cardiovascular fitness. Students will use the "Map my Run" app to log their workouts and track progress. Broomball: Students will be introduced to the game of broomball and learn how this recreational activity can be used outside the classroom. Table Tennis: Students will be introduced to the game of table tennis and learn how this recreational activity can be used outside the classroom as a lifelong activity. This week students are completing pre-tests for the course to help assess their current fitness levels. Students will use this information to help them choose units during the semester and track their progress. There are 3 categories of tests for students to choose from: Strength & Conditioning; Sports Fitness; General Wellness.
Non-Traditional Team Games - (Team Sports)
These games are a collection of non-traditional team games that incorporate concepts of team play, movement patterns, and fitness. The focus of the unit will be on effort and participation. The games in this unit will include gatorball, ultimate frisbee, tchoukball, kickball, and others. Enduring Understandings*: TS-2; TS-3; TS-5; HW-1 Walking/Jogging - (Fitness) Students will practice various cardio activities and learn how to build a program progression throughout the unit. Options will include walking/jogging outside (weather permitting) and cardiovascular equipment in the weight room. Students walking/jogging outside will track their progress and results using the 'Map my Run' app. Enduring Understandings*: F-1; F-4; F-5; HW-1 Strength Training/Cardiovascular Exercises - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts, including weight training, group exercises, cardiovascular endurance, and more. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build knowledge within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose options within the weight room unit to meet their individual goals. Enduring Understandings*: F-1; F-4; F-5; HW-1 Lawn Games - (Recreation)
During this unit students will learn the rules, skills, and concepts of various Lawn Games through competition. Games included are cornhole, spikeball, jenga, bocce, and kan-jam. The focus will be on skill improvement and game understanding, while also emphasizing concepts including respect, confidence, and social fulfillment. Enduring Understandings*: RA-2; RA-3, RA-5 Strength Training/Cardiovascular Exercises - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts, including weight training, group exercises, cardiovascular endurance, and more. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build knowledge within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose options within the weight room unit to meet their individual goals. Enduring Understandings*: F-1; F-4; F-5; HW-1 Basketball - (Team & Individual Sports)
During this unit students will learn the rules, skills, and concepts of basketball through small-sided competitive games and skill specific games. The focus will be on skill improvement and game understanding, while also emphasizing fitness concepts including cardiovascular benefits and effort. Enduring Understandings*: TS-1; TS-3, TS-4 Strength Training/Cardiovascular Exercises - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts, including weight training, group exercises, cardiovascular endurance, and more. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build knowledge within the fitness category or learn new concepts. During this unit students will learn the rules, skills, and concepts of broomball/floor hockey through team practice and competition. The focus will be on skill improvement and game understanding, while also emphasizing sportsmanship and safety. Weight Room Activities - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts learned throughout the semester. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build off previous work within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose option within the weight room unit to meet their individual goals. Badminton - (Recreational Activities)
During this unit students will build off the rules and fundamentals learned in the previous unit, with a focus on game play and competition. Students will participate in singles and doubles games, as well as tournament play. Enduring Understandings*: RA-1; RA-3; RA-4; RA-5; TS-4 Strength Training/Cardiovascular Exercises - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts, including weight training, group exercises, cardiovascular endurance, and more. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build knowledge within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose options within the weight room unit to meet their individual goals. Enduring Understandings*: F-1; F-4; F-5; HW-1 Badminton - (Recreational Activities)
During this unit students will learn the rules, skills, and concepts of badminton through team practice and competition. The focus will be on skill improvement and game understanding, while also emphasizing game strategy. Enduring Understandings*: RA-1; RA-2; TS-4 Strength Training/Cardiovascular Exercises - (Fitness) During this unit students will have access to all fitness concepts, including weight training, group exercises, cardiovascular endurance, and more. Weight room workouts will include concepts of strength training and functional fitness, allowing students to build knowledge within the fitness category or learn new concepts. Students will be able to choose options within the weight room unit to meet their individual goals. Enduring Understandings*: F-1; F-4; F-5; HW-1 *These enduring understandings will be emphasized throughout the unit Celebration of Activities - (All Categories)
Options offered will be a range of all activities from throughout the semester, including Fitness, Sports, and Recreation. Students will have the option to choose a different activity each class. The focus of the unit will be to revisit past experiences and celebrate the progress made throughout the semester. |
